Bio-Tensegrity and Structural Integration: Finding Balance in the Body
Bio-tensegrity refers to a biological system that relies on principles of tensegrity. Tensegrity, a word combination of tension and integrity, describes a finitely closed structure (human body) held in balance among continuous lines of tension with discontinuous compressional struts. To understand why this matters for the human body, it helps to first look at how tensegrity operates as a system.
How is Tensegrity Relevant to Structural Integration?
In a tensegrity system, when one tensional line shortens, the whole system reacts and reorganizes to accommodate that shortness. As a result, excessive shortness establishes an avenue for excess strain throughout the entire structure. Over a lifetime, people develop a multitude of different patterns that are gradually reinforced neurologically, then structurally. The development of a structural shortness and resultant long opposing tissue is a combination of a neurological movement pattern, and the fascial adhesions formed to reinforce the tissue dealing with more force. Three of the most common stuck structural postures include:
- Anterior or Posterior Pelvic Tilt: A deviation of the pelvis from a neutral position affects many different structures, including quality of breath, leg positioning, and more
- Medially or Laterally Shifted Knees: Valgus and varus knees, commonly known as knocked knees and bow legs, shift weight unevenly through the legs. Without neutral knee orientation, that uneven pressure distributes across the menisci and leads to excessive wear and tear over time.
- Pronation or Supination of the Foot: A foot operating in excessive pronation or supination triggers a chain of rotational compensations up the leg, which in turn causes knee and hip pain further up the system.
Anatomy Trains Structural Integration applies tensegrity to the human body through the fibrous body, specifically fascia. In people, fascia holds the body within a continuous sea of tension, while the bones serve as compressional struts and the muscles act as pressure and tension regulators.
